When
Jack Peterson enlisted in the United States Navy as an 18 year old while
continuing to pursue his college education and volunteer for the Boy Scouts of
America, he had little notion of where it would lead over the ensuing 45 years.
The Navy was a natural fit for him, even though he visited all the other
services, in part as a result of having traveled the world over ? from places as
remote as little Watson, Illinois to the far reaches of Adak, Alaska at the end
of the Aleutian Island chain to several sites in Japan, all as a youth.
Born in Santa Ana, California, he soon cruised in his mother?s arms on an
MTS ship (a little less luxurious ride than a cruise today) to Guam in the
Marianas Islands and the adventure began.
The vagabond lifestyle suited his tastes, spending seldom more than 18 months in
one place until retiring from the Navy as a Commander in the Medical Service
Corps. So did the idea of service,
healthcare and the outdoors.
Following his 26 years in the Navy, as often as not alongside Unites States
Marines, and during which he was a hospital corpsman with The Mean and Green
(Marines) and later commissioned as a hospital administration specialist, he
continued a career in civilian healthcare.
Those next 15 years were enriched through the service to patients seeking
quality care. And the outdoors,
while having new meaning to him after reaching the rank of Eagle Scout and then
transferring those skills to foxholes, ultimately led to the notion of offering
executive women opportunities in the boonies learning more about leadership in a
weekend then they often did in a year in the board room.
Jack?s education lent much to his career in healthcare administration as well as
his consulting practice. The George
Washington University in Washington, D.C. conferred a Bachelor of Science degree
with an area of concentration in administration and the University of Southern
California granted a Master of Science is Systems Management.
The focus on systems management, referring to the science of evaluating
the impact of one aspect by and upon all of the others honed his thinking
process ? he sees the whole as well as the parts and how they interface when
addressing quality, culture and leadership issues.
He keeps active in the field of healthcare quality through venues as varied as
service as a director on the Healthcare Quality Certification Board and
Examination Committee (3 year life-time term ending 2009), as a local
association organizer for El Paso, Texas, and as a regular participant in annual
state and national quality conferences.
